Elizabeth Warren calls to abolish the Electoral College

JACKSON, MS — During a CNN town hall, Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren expressed that she hopes to eventually eliminate the electoral college established in the United States Constitution, because “every vote counts.”

In the discussion, Warren expressed:

“Come a general election, presidential candidates don’t come to places like Mississippi. They also don’t come to places like California or Massachusetts, because we’re not the battleground states. My view is that every vote matters and the way we can make that happen is that we can have national voting and that means get rid of the Electoral College, and every vote counts.”

Proponents of abolishing the electoral college argue that the Democratic Party has seen two of their presidential candidates (Al Gore and Hillary Clinton), since 2000, win the popular vote only to lose the Electoral College.

Supporters of the Electoral College argue that Los Angeles county in California has a greater population than 41 states. This alone gives one single county more power than an entire state.

Abolishing the Electoral College would also be a nearly impossible process. In order to implement such a change, Democrats would need to obtain 2/3 of the vote in both houses of Congress to pass a Constitutional amendment.
